News from Hilary

I share the concerns of passengers who once again face increases on their rail fares. The announcement that fares have risen by an average of 1.1% from January 2016, confirms that fares will have risen by a quarter since 2010, and the cost of some season tickets will have risen by as much as nearly 40 per cent - leaving passengers paying thousands of pounds more in some cases than just five years ago.

Hilary campaigning to save student maintenance grants

Many constituents have contacted me about student maintenance grants.

The Government is wholly wrong to be abolishing them. The grants are vital for students from low income backgrounds and it will be very damaging if they go.  We are fighting this as the Labour opposition as hard as we can, and I am appalled that the Government has used a statutory instrument – which minimises scrutiny – to push this through.

I condemn in the strongest terms, the decision of the Saudi government to execute Sheikh al Nimr and three young Shi’a men whose only alleged offences appear to have involved taking part in political protests and demonstrations against the Government.  As you may know, the Labour Party opposes the use of the death penalty in every circumstance.

Hilary recently met with representatives of Charlies Angel Centre, an organisation based in Leeds which provides bereavement support to parents and families after the loss of a child.  Following the death of Charlie Arthur Curtis in December 2012, Charlie's family set up the organisation to support others affected by the death of a baby or child.

Floods..Xmas.2015.jpgThe first indication was the automated flood warning phone call from the Environment Agency.

There wasn’t much I could do about it as I was away at the time enjoying Boxing Day with the family and my two grandsons, but I spent the evening watching the River Aire rise alarmingly, courtesy of Twitter and some intrepid reporting by South Leeds Life, including photographs of water where we have never seen it before.

Many people have written to me about the vote in the House of Commons on 2nd December to extend British airstrikes against ISIL/Daesh to Syria.

As you may appreciate, I have had a lot of emails both against and in favour of this decision, and there were consequences whichever way Parliament voted. As you may know Jeremy Corbyn took the decision to give Labour MPs a free vote and many of my parliamentary colleagues came to a different conclusion to my own. I would add that it was  completely unacceptable of the Prime Minister to suggest that those opposed to airstrikes were ‘terrorist sympathisers’. David Cameron should have apologised to Jeremy Corbyn and everyone else he insulted with those remarks and I urged him to do so in the debate in Parliament.

ISIL/Daesh poses a threat both regionally in its main area of military operations and internationally through terrorism.

Labour agrees that we must act to end the threat from ISIL/Daesh to the region and internationally and that it is a vital national interest to defeat ISIL/Daesh. The tragic events in Paris have emphasized just how important this is to us all.
