"We travelled for several days, sleeping out, until the Jordanian army picked us up in a truck and brought us here." Such was the matter of fact account of what must have been a traumatic journey for this mother and her four children - the youngest a toddler - as they fled from Syria to Jordan to escape the fighting and the barrel bombs. "Even now", she added, "when the children hear a plane overhead they become frightened again."

A lot of constituents have contacted me recently regarding the Government’s regulations on fracking.

As you may be aware, the Government’s weakened regulations would allow fracking in drinking water protection zones and important wildlife sites, as well as under the ground below protected areas such as national parks and areas of outstanding national beauty. I share your concern about these regulations, which I believe are totally inadequate.

I want a world in which there are no nuclear weapons and no-one wants to be in the position of having to contemplate their use. We all know from Hiroshima and Nagasaki about their terrible destructive power.

Earlier this summer we saw that shocking photograph of Aylan Kurdi lying dead on a Turkish beach. This small and precious child had his whole life before him when his desperate family - victims of a civil war that is raging through Syria - stepped into a boat. They had fled from Kobane - a city where the BBC tells us "every building, home, shop and street is ruined.”

I have been a proud trade union member for 40 years and spent 22 years working for a union. I believe in the right of trade unions to represent their members – a fundamental freedom – but sadly we have a Government which wants to attack them rather than work together in a spirit of social partnership.

A large number of my constituents contacted me about the Assisted Dying Bill. As some of you will know, the House of Commons debated the Bill on 11th September and it was defeated by 330 votes to 118.  The Hansard record is available here so you can see what was said. I did vote for the Bill, but I respect the fact that there was a clear majority against it.
