NGT Trolleybus Scheme Scrapped by the Government

Even though NGT was a second choice scheme, this decision is bad news for Leeds.

The Government sat on the Inspector's report for too long and, after seven years, we are no further on in tackling Leeds' transport problems.

We now have to take control of getting a modern rapid transport system. Leeds is a major European city and we need a tram and light rail scheme to get people about. We have got to be ambitious.

My message to the Government is this.

First, give us full control of the £173m so the city can take its own decisions to improve transport.
Secondly, stop dithering and agree the city region’s devolution deal which would include powers to run the bus network like the Mayor has in London. If it's good enough for the capital, then it's good enough for Leeds.

Only if we get these powers and the money can we stop this sort of thing from happening again and take charge of our own future.
