I have been a proud trade union member for 40 years and spent 22 years working for a union. I believe in the right of trade unions to represent their members – a fundamental freedom – but sadly we have a Government which wants to attack them rather than work together in a spirit of social partnership.
I am therefore opposed to this Bill, and as the Labour opposition we voted against it last night; unfortunately it was given a second reading. This is what my colleague Angela Eagle, the Shadow Business Secretary, said in her speech:
“The Bill is a divisive piece of legislation which undermines the basic protections that trade unions provide for people at work. This is a partisan attack to undermine those unions, and the Labour party, but it will have substantial implications for more than 6 million workers by undermining unions’ ability to stop harassment in the workplace and ensure that the basic health and safety of workers is maintained.”
Her speech is available in full here.
I can assure you that we will continue to argue against this piece of legislation.
